Once little more than a scatter of fishermen's huts, Southend became one of London's favourite seaside escapes after the railway arrived in 1852, its population climbing from around 2,800 to 29,000 within thirty years. Its wrought-iron pier, rebuilt in 1889 and stretching over a mile into the Thames Estuary, remains the longest pleasure pier in the world. It was granted city status in 2022, honouring MP Sir David Amess.
