Grimstad sits on the Skagerrak coast amid a skerry-studded archipelago between Arendal and Lillesand, granted trading rights under neighboring Arendal in 1622 and market-town status in 1816. A young Henrik Ibsen worked here as a pharmacist's apprentice in the 1840s, writing his first play in a room above the shop that is now preserved as the Ibsen House museum, and the town is also home to the University of Agder.
