Three mountain ranges, the Chartreuse, Vercors, and Belledonne, converge on Grenoble, and cable cars have carried visitors up to the Bastille fortress since 1934, reshaped in 1976 into the egg-shaped cabins nicknamed 'les bulles', for a view of all three at once. Hosting the 1968 Winter Olympics reshaped the city's infrastructure, and the research culture it left behind has since made Grenoble a major European hub for semiconductor and technology industries.
