Built along the Tammerkoski rapids linking two lakes, Tampere rose to prominence when Scotsman James Finlayson opened a cotton mill on the waterway in 1820, eventually making it Finland's leading industrial center. Many of the red-brick mills have since become museums, theaters, and restaurants, while the city is also home to the world's only Moomin Museum, dedicated to Tove Jansson's characters.
