Built from rugged grey dolomite starting in the 1380s, Kuressaare's episcopal castle is the only medieval fortress in the Baltic states never significantly altered by later rebuilding. Ringed by deep moats and earthen bastions, it passed from the bishops of Saare-Lääne to Danish, Swedish, and finally Russian rule before becoming the Saaremaa Museum. The surrounding town remains Estonia's best-known island spa destination.
