A Benedictine monastery founded in 1135 gave rise to Næstved, which received its market charter in 1426 and grew into southern Zealand's largest town on the banks of the Suså, the island's longest river. Sankt Peder Church, the monastery's last remnant, still stands alongside the Gothic St Morten's Church and a medieval hospital turned museum, while nearby Gavnø Castle draws crowds each spring for its blooming tulip gardens.
