Archbishop Absalon documented Holbæk as early as 1199, and the town owes its start to a royal stronghold King Valdemar II raised here in 1236, at the head of a fjord opening onto the Isefjord. Long a regional trading port, it still runs a ferry to the small island of Orø and has turned a former power station, Musikhus Elværket, into a popular concert venue.
