The world's first torpedo was designed and built in Rijeka, where the Whitehead Torpedo Works opened in 1866, turning the city into a center of naval engineering for decades. Trsat Castle, standing on the site of an Illyrian and Roman fort, overlooks the harbor and the Korzo, the pedestrian promenade at the heart of daily life. In 2020, Rijeka shared the title European Capital of Culture with Galway.
