Whitby Township was named in 1792 after the Yorkshire seaport, its downtown taking shape from 1836 under founder Peter Perry around a natural harbour that shipped grain from local farms as early as 1833. The Trafalgar Castle, built as a residence in the 1860s, became a girls' school in 1874 and remains the town's only provincially designated historic site. During the Second World War, Camp X trained secret agents nearby.
