Abbotsford's development followed the Fraser River gold rush of 1858, when Royal Engineers surveyed the area, and a later crown grant to former engineer John Cunningham Maclure in 1889. Dairy, berries, and produce replaced early logging, and roughly seventy percent of the city still lies within British Columbia's protected Agricultural Land Reserve. Abbotsford now earns the highest farm income per acre of any community in Canada.
