Set in the Vesdre valley east of Liège, Verviers grew wealthy on wool after the region's soft, lime-free river water proved ideal for washing raw fleece, and the English engineer William Cockerill introduced the continent's first mechanised spinning machines here in 1799. For nearly two centuries the city rivalled Bradford as a global wool capital, a legacy still visible in its grand nineteenth-century mansions and mills.
