On the Dender River in East Flanders, Ninove grew up around a Premonstratensian abbey founded in 1137 by the local lord Gerard I, which became one of the region's largest grain producers on its extensive landholdings. Though the original medieval church was demolished, a Baroque abbey church consecrated in 1727 still stands at the town's centre, surrounded by the rolling farmland typical of the Denderstreek.
