North of Vienna, where vineyards climb the hills above the Danube, Klosterneuburg grew up around the Augustinian monastery founded in 1114 by Leopold III, later canonised as Austria's patron saint. Its abbey church holds the Verdun Altar, a glowing enamel-and-gold masterpiece finished by Nicholas of Verdun in 1181, and the monastery's cellars have produced wine continuously since the 12th century, making it one of Austria's oldest working wineries.
