Hønefoss takes its name from the waterfall where the Begna and Randselva rivers meet to form the Storelva, a thundering drop that once powered sawmills and, from 1873, the Follum paper mill, at one point among Europe's largest newsprint producers before it closed in 2012. Independent from Norderhov since 1852 and merged into Ringerike as its administrative center in 1964, the town still trades for the surrounding farming districts.
