After Sarpsborg was burned by Swedish forces, Danish king Frederick II founded Fredrikstad in 1567; its star-shaped fortress town, Gamlebyen, on the Glomma river's eastern bank is now cited as Northern Europe's best-preserved fortified town, with ramparts and a moat begun after the 1644 Hannibal War. A 1764 fire pushed the city's center across the river to Vestsiden, which eventually outgrew the old walled town entirely.
