A planned commuter town on Voorne-Putten island south of Rotterdam, in South Holland, Spijkenisse grew rapidly from the 1970s onward to house workers for the nearby Europoort harbour and petrochemical industry. Its modern centre, built almost entirely from scratch within a generation, is typical of the region's postwar growth towns.
