Settled in 1170 around a natural harbour, Kalundborg is dominated by the five-spired Church of Our Lady, traditionally credited to Bishop Absalon's brother, Esbern Snare. The town became a pioneer of industrial recycling in 1961, when its oil refinery and power station began sharing water, steam, and waste with neighbouring plants in what's now studied as 'Kalundborg Symbiosis.' Nearby, the Lerchenborg estate is considered Denmark's finest example of rococo architecture.
