Technically its own municipality surrounded by Copenhagen, Frederiksberg began in 1651 when King Frederik III settled Dutch farmers on the site he called Ny Amager. It took its name after Frederik IV crowned the hilltop with a palace in 1700, and once 19th-century building restrictions lifted, the population exploded from 3,000 to 80,000 by 1900. Today its palace gardens, canals, and Copenhagen Zoo sit among Denmark's most fashionable tree-lined streets.
