First recorded in 1348, Liberec grew wealthy on cloth-making after 1579 and by the 19th century, powered by the Liebieg family's mills, was nicknamed the Manchester of Bohemia. High above the rooftops on Ještěd Mountain stands its most recognizable symbol: a hyperboloid concrete tower combining a hotel, restaurant, and transmitter, completed in 1973 and still considered a landmark of Czech modern architecture.
