Mennonite settlers from Pennsylvania founded this community in 1807, and it grew into a city called Berlin, reflecting the German immigrants who later shaped its culture and industry. Anti-German sentiment during the First World War led to a 1916 referendum renaming it Kitchener, after the British field marshal. That heritage lives on in the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, the second-largest in the world, while former factories now house tech firms like Google.
