Only once every five years, Telfs stages the Schleicherlaufen, a Tyrolean carnival procession documented since the 16th century in which around 500 costumed men parade through the streets in roles unchanged for generations; UNESCO added the custom to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in recognition of its unbroken lineage. Set in the broad Inn valley beneath the Tyrolean Alps, Telfs otherwise makes its living as a market and manufacturing town.
